BC Parks will:
- Consider how it conducts its operations and adapts service delivery to lower Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.
- Increase the knowledge and skills of BC Parks employees to develop and implement climate change adaptation strategies for species, ecosystems, visitor services and recreational opportunities.
- Collaborate with partners, clients and stakeholders in developing a mutual understanding of the effects of climate change on species, ecosystems, visitor services and recreational opportunities, and in devising and implementing adaptation strategies.
- Monitor and continuously assess changing climate conditions and the effects on species, ecosystems, visitor services and recreational opportunities, and adjust BC Parks’ management strategies and investments accordingly.
- Use a diverse set of strategies to help species and ecosystems deal with climate change and the uncertainty of future climate impacts. These include:
- creating and/or maintaining landscape and watershed connectivity to enable dispersal and flow;
- identifying and reducing threats to ecosystem resilience, particularly in parks and protected areas; and
- maintaining a diversity of ecosystems whenever possible.
- Consider the effects of climate change mitigation measures (alternative energy development and greenhouse gas reduction) on the adaptive capacity of species and on ecosystem resilience as well as on visitor services and recreational opportunities.
- Consider the effects of adaptation strategies of species, ecosystems, visitor services and recreational opportunities on efforts to reduce greenhouse gases. For example, prescribed burning to improve wildlife habitat needs to consider its effects on greenhouse gas emissions.
- Investigate what implications climate change could have for park visitation and visitor-related management issues.
- Consider the role of BC Parks visitors with regard to climate change and how BC Parks can engage visitors in learning about climate change in parks and protected areas.
